High Output Stomas – why do they happen and how to manage?

This session outlines the definition, causes, consequences and management of high output stomas, with a focus on their association with short bowel syndrome. High output stomas can lead to significant nutrient, fluid and electrolyte losses, resulting in severe electrolyte deficiencies, renal impairment, and malnutrition. Management requires an understanding of the aetiology, alongside appropriate fluid strategies, dietary advice and pharmacological treatments.

Parenteral nutrition in ICU- why is it different?

This session aims to give an insight into prescribing of parenteral nutrition on Critical Care. The session will look at the differences between ITU and a general ward environment, why parenteral nutrition may be needed and when to start for critically ill patients and will use a case example to discuss some of these points.
