BPNG at the Clinical Pharmacy Congress

The BPNG are running two sessions at the congress Title: Nutrition Support - The role of the pharmacist Speaker: Priya Mistry, Lead Pharmacist, Nutrition Support & Intestinal Failure, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust Synopsis: There are a wide range of opportunities for pharmacists to be involved in nutrition support. Take a holistic approach. Work in collaboration with the dietitian/nutrition team. Consider the impact on medication. Dose the route, formulation or dosing schedule need to change? It is a key area for non medical prescribing and working in a multidisciplinary team. Learning Outcomes: 1. What is malnutrition and how is it identified? 2. What are the different forms of nutrition support? 3. What is refeeding syndrome and why is it important? 4. What is the role of the pharmacist in nutrition support?   Title: The pharmaceutical challenges of managing high output stomas Speakers: Riddikha Joshi, Maryam Clark and Roshni Patel, all Senior Specialist Pharmacists - Gastroenterology and Nutrition, St Mark's Hospital, London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust Synopsis: We will cover the background to stoma formation and the different stomas pharmacists may encounter. The focus will be on gastrointestinal stomas. Pharmaceutical management will be covered with a focus on pharmacokinetics and clinical governance. We will also be discussing the use of intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition and the long term considerations that need to be made when managing these patients.
